Geographical Location
The city of Jauja is 3,410 meters above sea level, with a latitude south of 11°46'31” and a longitude west 75°30'00”. It offers a series of ecological zones, from the snowcapped mountains, which go up to 5,750 meters above sea level, to the jungle. Archeological Area of Pueblo Viejo (“Marca”)

Daniel Dávila Manrique (Archeologist)

Pueblo Viejo
The archeological area of Pueblo Viejo (historically known as “Marca,” the Quechua word meaning town) is located at the top of a hill 200 meters above the Paca Lagoon, at an altitude of 3,600 meters above sea level. Geographically, it is in the district of Acolla, which is 5.5 km north of the Incan Settlement of Hatún Xauxa, and covers an area of 33 hectares.

Pueblo Viejo
Pueblo Viejo possesses two summits separated by a highly eroded area. The archeological area is composed of about 460 circular and rectangular houses with small patios, surrounded by walls and narrow passages. The walls were built using the technique known as “pirka.” Pueblo Viejo is accessible through either the road of Jauja to Tarma or the road that links Jauja with the district of Paca.
